    Negative ion Time Projection Chamber operation with SF6_{6} at nearly atmospheric pressure

    We present measurements of drift velocities and mobilities of some innovative negative ion gas mixtures at nearly atmospheric pressure based on SF6_{6} as electronegative capture agent and of pure SF6_{6} at various pressures, performed with the NITEC detector. NITEC is a Time Projection Chamber with 5 cm drift distance readout by a GEMPix, a triple thin GEMs coupled to a Quad-Timepix chip, directly sensitive to the deposited charge on each of the 55 ×\times 55 μ\mum2^2 pixel. Our results contribute to expanding the knowledge on the innovative use of SF6_{6} as negative ion gas and extend to triple thin GEMs the possibility of negative ion operation for the first time. Above all, our findings show the feasibility of negative ion operation with He:CF4_4:SF6_{6} at 610 Torr, opening extremely interesting possibility for next generation directional Dark Matter detectors at 1 bar

    Integrating Aerial Base Stations for sustainable urban mobile networks

    The extensive densification of mobile networks is increasing the network energy consumption and leading to remarkable economical and sustainability concerns. At the same time, regulatory and physical constraints, especially in urban environments, may limit the network expansion and the free installation of Base Stations (BSs). In this context, High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPSs) are emerging as a promising solution to host aerial BSs that can provide additional capacity over a wide geographical area, to offload the on-ground mobile network and support a sustainable transition towards the 6G era. This paper investigates the potential of HAPS offloading to reduce the energy demand from the grid and the operational cost of mobile networks. Our results highlight the effectiveness of HAPS offloading in reducing the size of the RE supply that is required to achieve grid energy reduction on the terrestrial network, thus enhancing the feasibility of a sustainable evolution towards 6G networks. Different allocation strategies are designed and analyzed under several configuration settings, to dynamically adapt the HAPS capacity to the traffic variability in space and over time. A fine tuning of the strategy settings is proved effective in trading off physical constraints, operational cost, sustainability goals, and Quality of Service

    Investigating The Physics Case of Running a B-Factory at the Y(5S) Resonance

    We discuss the physics case of a high luminosity B-Factory running at the Y(5S) resonance. We show that the coherence of the B meson pairs is preserved at this resonance, and that Bs can be well distinguished from Bd and charged B mesons. These facts allow to cover the physics program of a traditional B-Factory and, at the same time, to perform complementary measurements which are not accessible at the Y(4S). In particular we show how, despite the experimental limitations in performing time-dependent measurements of Bs decays, the same experimental information can be extracted, in several cases, from the determination of time-integrated observables. In addition, a few examples of the potentiality in measuring rare Bs decays are given. Finally, we discuss how the study of Bs meson will improve the constraints on New Physics parameters in the Bs sector, in the context of the generalized Unitarity Triangle analysis.Comment: 47 pages, 22 figure

    Mobile customer relationship management : An explorative investigation of the italian consumer market

    Mobile customer relationship management (CRM) services seem to have all the characteristics commonly associated with successful mobile services and have accordingly been predicted to be among the most promising. However, real development of this sector has not been well explored so far, especially in relation to the actual supply of mobile CRM services to the public. The purpose of this paper is to reduce this gap by giving a first snapshot of the current development of the supply of mobile CRM services to consumers taken in the context of the Italian market. In order to do so, it firstly proposes a conceptual framework indicating the relevant aspects to investigate for assessing this kind of environments: the market, value propositions, actors and issues. Then it applies this framework to get an overview of the supply of mobile CRM services in Italy and provides some empirical insight about its current development obtained through an exhaustive survey of the current supply of 750 services from 353 firms

    Agriculture 4.0: A systematic literature review on the paradigm, technologies and benefits

    Demographics will increase the demand for food and reduce the availability of labour in many countries all over the world. Moreover, scarcity of natural resources, climate change and food waste these are issues that are strongly impacting the agricultural sector and undermining sus-tainability. Digitalisation is expected to be a driving force in tackling these problems that are characterising agriculture. In particular, the adoption of digital technologies to support processes in the primary sector goes by the name of Agriculture 4.0. Although the number of contributions related to these issues is constantly growing, several areas are still unexplored or not fully addressed. This paper addresses the adoption of digital technologies and investigates the appli-cation domain of these technologies, presenting a systematic review of the literature on this subject. Moreover, this research shed light on the technologies adopted and related benefits. Hence, the research has turned its attention to the description of the main pillars, such as the categorisation of its main application domains and enabling technologies. The results of the research show that the different technologies applied in the various fields of application provide benefits both in terms of efficiency (cost reduction, farm productivity) and reduced environ-mental impact and increased sustainability

    Targeting RAGE prevents muscle wasting and prolongs survival in cancer cachexia

    Background: Cachexia, a multifactorial syndrome affecting more than 50% of patients with advanced cancer and responsible for ~20% of cancer-associated deaths, is still a poorly understood process without a standard cure available. Skeletal muscle atrophy caused by systemic inflammation is a major clinical feature of cachexia, leading to weight loss, dampening patients' quality of life, and reducing patients' response to anticancer therapy. RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end-products) is a multiligand receptor of the immunoglobulin superfamily and a mediator of muscle regeneration, inflammation, and cancer. Methods: By using murine models consisting in the injection of colon 26 murine adenocarcinoma (C26-ADK) or Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells in BALB/c and C57BL/6 or Ager−/− (RAGE-null) mice, respectively, we investigated the involvement of RAGE signalling in the main features of cancer cachexia, including the inflammatory state. In vitro experiments were performed using myotubes derived from C2C12 myoblasts or primary myoblasts isolated from C57BL/6 wild type and Ager−/− mice treated with the RAGE ligand, S100B (S100 calcium-binding protein B), TNF (tumor necrosis factor)α±IFN (interferon) γ, and tumour cell- or masses-conditioned media to analyse hallmarks of muscle atrophy. Finally, muscles of wild type and Ager−/− mice were injected with TNFα/IFNγ or S100B in a tumour-free environment. Results: We demonstrate that RAGE is determinant to activate signalling pathways leading to muscle protein degradation in the presence of proinflammatory cytokines and/or tumour-derived cachexia-inducing factors. We identify the RAGE ligand, S100B, as a novel factor able to induce muscle atrophy per se via a p38 MAPK (p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase)/myogenin axis and STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3)-dependent MyoD (myoblast determination protein 1) degradation. Lastly, we found that in cancer conditions, an increase in serum levels of tumour-derived S100B and HMGB1 (high mobility group box 1) occurs leading to chronic activation/overexpression of RAGE, which induces hallmarks of cancer cachexia (i.e. muscle wasting, systemic inflammation, and release of tumour-derived pro-cachectic factors). Absence of RAGE in mice translates into reduced serum levels of cachexia-inducing factors, delayed loss of muscle mass and strength, reduced tumour progression, and increased survival. Conclusions: RAGE is a molecular determinant in inducing the hallmarks of cancer cachexia, and molecular targeting of RAGE might represent a therapeutic strategy to prevent or counteract the cachectic syndrome
